Central Virginia Community Kickoff Meeting
- ABOUT THIS GATHERING -
We're starting something here in Central Virginia.
The Balance Project is a parent-led movement helping families and schools navigate childhood in a screen-saturated world — together. From smartphones and social media to YouTube, gaming, tablets, TV, and screen-heavy classrooms, many adults are asking the same questions: What is all of this doing to our kids, and what does a healthier balance look like?
Across the country, communities are beginning to rethink the role technology plays in childhood, learning, attention, play, relationships, and independence. The Balance Project has already taken root in 280+ communities across 42 states and has been featured in CBS News, TIME, USA Today, and The Atlantic.
Now it's our turn.
- THE FIRST MEETING -
This gathering is exactly that: a first meeting.
No fundraising. No curriculum to sell. No pressure to agree on everything. Just community members coming together to talk honestly about the realities families and schools are facing — and to begin building the relationships, trust, and local momentum that make healthier choices easier to sustain.
Some people are concerned about smartphones and social media. Others are thinking about gaming, YouTube, attention spans, online safety, screen-heavy classrooms, or the loss of free play and face-to-face connection. Many are simply trying to figure out what balance looks like in a world where screens are now woven into nearly every part of childhood.
You do not need to arrive with a fixed position. Curiosity is enough.
- WHO THIS IS FOR -
Anyone helping raise, teach, support, or care for a Central Virginia child is welcome.
Parents and stepparents. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Teachers, principals, school counselors, coaches, pediatric clinicians, librarians, youth leaders, foster parents, caregivers, and community members invested in kids and families.
You do not need to have read the books, listened to the podcasts, or already know about The Balance Project. You do not need to be “anti-tech.” Most people are simply trying to think more intentionally about how technology is shaping childhood — at home, at school, and in everyday life.
If you’ve ever felt uncertain, overwhelmed, outnumbered, or alone in trying to navigate these decisions, this room is for you.
- WHAT WE'LL DO AT THIS MEETING -
Ninety minutes, informal but structured. Plan on:
- A short welcome and introduction — what The Balance Project is, what it isn't, and why it's resonating right now
- An overview of how existing chapters operate and how communities are creating shared norms and support systems around childhood and technology.
- Small-group conversation about what’s working, what isn’t, and what questions families and educators are wrestling with.
- Discussion about what makes sense for our region and opportunities for anyone who wants to help shape future gatherings in any capacity.
You’ll leave with a few new connections, a clearer picture of what other communities are doing, and a sense of whether this work aligns with what you already want for the kids in your life.
- WHY NOW -
Conversations about kids and technology have become impossible to ignore.
Families are navigating smartphones earlier than ever. Teachers are managing increasing distraction and screen dependence in classrooms. Parents are trying to balance digital convenience with concerns about attention, mental health, sleep, social development, free play, and independence. At the same time, many adults feel pressure to handle these issues alone.
The challenge is not simply individual screens — it’s the broader culture surrounding childhood and technology.
Some schools and communities have already begun experimenting with phone-free school days, delayed smartphone norms, more play-based childhood experiences, and clearer boundaries around digital media. But in many places, families still feel stuck: wanting something different, but unsure how to move forward when everyone else seems to be doing things differently.
The Balance Project is built around a simple idea: when families, schools, and communities communicate and coordinate, healthier norms become easier to create and sustain.
It’s difficult to make countercultural choices alone. It becomes much easier when communities move together.
That's what we're starting to build here.

Do I have to commit to anything by attending?
No. Come listen. Come once. Come to every meeting.
Send an email when you have time. Every form of input moves this forward.
Do I need to know about The Balance Project already?
No. Most people at the kickoff will be hearing about it for the first time.
Will there be follow-up meetings?
Yes — frequency, format, and focus will be decided as a group at this first meeting.
Are kids welcome at this meeting?
This first gathering is geared toward adults talking honestly about kids, so we'd suggest leaving little ones at home if you can. Future meetings may include family-friendly formats.

Yes. Midlothian Library's Community Room is on the ground floor and ADA-accessible. Free parking on site.
