Finish Phone-free Schools NOW!

Massachusetts is closer than ever to phone-free schools, but the bill is stuck. The House and Senate agree on phone-free schools but disagree on how to regulate social media. The Legislature’s formal sessions ended July 31, and lawmakers are now meeting in informal sessions, where it’s harder to pass anything contested. The two-year session ends in early January 2027. Anything not finished by then has to start over. That’s why hearing from parents right now matters.

Why This Action Matters

Massachusetts is closer than ever to phone-free schools, but the bill is stuck.
The Senate passed a bell-to-bell school cellphone ban on July 31, 2025, by a vote of 38 to 2. The House passed its own version on April 8, 2026, 129 to 25, and added new social media restrictions for kids. The bill went to a six-person conference committee on May 20, which first met on June 4. Months later, there's still no final bill.
Why it's stalled: both chambers agree on phone-free schools. They disagree on how to regulate social media, and that disagreement is holding up the part everyone already supports. The Legislature's formal sessions have ended, and if nothing passes before the two-year session ends in January, the bill has to start over.
Why it matters now: districts are going phone-free on their own, and the Governor just announced $1 million in phone-free school grants. But without a statewide law, every district is left to figure it out alone, and many are still waiting.
What we need: a short email from you. Ask the conference committee and your own legislators to finish phone-free schools now. It takes two minutes, and local voices matter most.
