Our Mission
Turning Life On is a coalition of parent-led groups across Massachusetts. We help families, schools and communities move toward a healthier, more intentional, age-appropriate relationship with technology, wherever they’re starting from. Our work focuses on four areas: Phones and social media. More childhood before the phone, with families waiting together on smartphones until high school and social media until 16. School. School should be the easy part: distraction-free classrooms, and EdTech that’s safe, effective and protects student privacy. AI. Powerful, and unsafe for kids. We’re pushing to pause AI with students until it’s proven safe. Real-life connection. Busy kids don’t miss their screens. Device-free events give families more time to connect in real life. We back our community leads with people, playbooks and funding: a monthly coalition call, meetups, one-on-one support whenever you’re stuck, step-by-step guides, and Community Grants for speakers, screenings and events. You don’t need a policy background or a big following. You just have to care. You bring the concern, and we’ll help carry what comes next. Our leads, in turn, are the heart of their communities. They host parent coffees and device-free events, help families in the same grade wait on phones together, share what’s working at home, and speak up together at school. One family, one school, one community at a time.

Finish Phone-free Schools NOW!
Massachusetts is closer than ever to phone-free schools, but the bill is stuck. The House and Senate agree on phone-free schools but disagree on how to regulate social media. The Legislature’s formal sessions ended July 31, and lawmakers are now meeting in informal sessions, where it’s harder to pass anything contested. The two-year session ends in early January 2027. Anything not finished by then has to start over. That’s why hearing from parents right now matters.
