Schools Beyond Screens - Eanes ISD

Petition for Intentional Technology Use in Eanes ISD Schools

Screens have spread through our classrooms faster than the evidence supports. Research increasingly shows that screen-based instruction doesn’t outperform traditional teaching, and that too much of it can harm students’ learning and development. Districts are responding. Los Angeles Unified, the nation’s second-largest, recently passed a resolution to reduce classroom screen time, remove devices for the youngest students, and require independent evidence before adopting EdTech programs. This isn’t about rejecting technology. Our students need strong digital skills, and technology has a real place in school. But it should be used with intention: where evidence shows it improves learning, at levels suited to each age, and never in place of the excellent teaching our educators provide. Eanes ISD prides itself on being a nationally recognized leader in public education, but it hasn't publicly addressed this issue or made meaningful changes. The district doesn’t need to wait for state or federal guidance to act. It needs to hear that its own community is paying attention and expects it to lead. This petition sends that message. Drawing on reforms already underway elsewhere, it lays out specific, practical steps to reduce unnecessary screen time and put evidence-based teaching first. Add your name and help us make it clear: Eanes ISD should set the standard, not wait for others to set it.
