We push for school policies grounded in independent research, public accountability, and developmentally-appropriate practice. We support technology that is intentional, limited, transparent, and genuinely useful—not technology adopted by default.

Pause Generative AI in APS Schools Until It's Proven Safe

Every parent wants their child to leave school sharper, more curious, and better prepared for life. However, the current research is not yet there to confirm that AI tools in the classroom support that goal and, some highly credible evidence suggests they may actually do harm. Driven by these concerns, Schools Beyond Screens Atlanta (APS) is requesting a thoughtful pause on generative AI use across the district. Rather than rushing to adopt any untested technology, we urge school leadership to take the time needed to thoroughly evaluate how these tools affect student privacy, mental health, and long-term learning.

Petition for Intentional Technology Use in APS Schools

Many school districts in the country are starting to move on classroom screen time -- setting hard, grade-level time limits, blocking YouTube and gaming platforms on school devices, eliminating devices for the youngest students, and requiring weekly screen time reports to parents. This movement is gaining momentum because parents, educators, and community members have organized and made their voices heard. APS has the same opportunity to lead. The school board does not need to wait for state or federal guidance—many districts have already implemented thoughtful technology policies that prioritize student learning and healthy development. Our community is sending a clear message that we expect our schools to balance innovation with responsibility and put students’ best interests first through evidence-based technology policies.
