Our Mission
The Balance Project: Wethersfield aims to find and maintain a healthy balance of real-world experiences and technology usage for our children, our schools and our community, through collective action. We are grounded in the four “new norms” established in the book, The Anxious Generation: - No smartphones before high school - No social media before 16 - Phone-free schools - More independence, free play and responsibility in the real world.

The Balance Project Supports Distraction-Free Schools
Join The Balance Project in supporting efforts to reduce digital distraction in New Jersey schools. Unlike 30+ other states, New Jersey does not currently have any statewide legislation regulating cellphones in classrooms. But with your help, this can change before the end of this year. The New Jersey Legislature is considering legislation to restrict the use of personal internet-enabled devices during the school day. On December 22, the State Assembly will vote on Bill A4882.

MORE SUMMER, LESS BUMMER
Many of us look forward to summer all year. And we know for certain that our kids do! The average “School’s Out Summer” is 99 days. 14 weeks. About 1,500 waking hours to enjoy the season we’ve been waiting for since the last one. But - wouldn’t it be a TOTAL BUMMER if we missed out on 1-2 weeks of that precious summer sunshine? Or worse…a full MONTH of summer, gone? That’s exactly what scrolling costs us at 1hr/day, 3hrs/day and 7.5hrs/day (avg teen scroll time). And that’s why, this summer, The Balance Project is asking the families in our 300 communities (and beyond!) to reclaim the small, real-life moments that add up to a life fully lived. Not by going off-grid. Not by “detoxing.” By being where we actually are. Let’s not let this season slip by. This summer, we want MORE SUMMER. LESS BUMMER.
