A Community of Schools Beyond Screens
Davie, FL

Our Mission

Schools Beyond Screens-Broward County Chapter formed because BCPS District Advisory Members are restricted with how they can advocate and who could be included in committees. We believe our parents and educators deserve a voice no matter how much or how little time they can put in, that as research changes so can our decisions, and children should come first in their own education, ahead of corporate interests and market trends. Our chapter plans to work with all who make decisions on children’s education. We believe when communities come together to advocate they can bring about real change.

Petition for Intentional Technology Use in Broward County Public Schools

Every school day, our children have limited time to learn, connect, ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. Those hours matter. When screens and online programs take up more of the day, families deserve to know what children may be missing—and whether the technology is truly helping them learn. We call on the Broward County School Board to adopt clear, enforceable policies that limit classroom screen time, ensure online lessons and diagnostic assessments are used only when they serve a clear educational purpose, and give families transparent, workable opt-out procedures. BCPS should publicly report how much time students spend on district platforms and evaluate supplemental tools, and online testing, using independent evidence and input from teachers and families. BCPS is facing a budget crisis. Every dollar spent on technology and recurring software contracts is a dollar that deserves careful scrutiny when teachers need better pay, classroom support, and resources for their students. Before renewing or expanding these programs, the district should prove to families that they work, disclose their full costs, and explain why they are a better investment than putting those resources directly into classrooms. Children’s developmental needs should guide these decisions. Teachers deserve the time and resources to teach responsively, and families deserve a voice in their children’s education. We urge BCPS to put students ahead of corporate interests and technology trends, uphold applicable federal and state law, and make its decisions openly and accountably. That includes transparency in BCPS’s decision to use one-to-one technology to increase class sizes, overburdening our students and teachers, despite the constant reassurances that technology does not replace teachers. Our children get one childhood. Let’s make sure their school days leave room for human connection, creativity, books, writing, discussion, and the kind of learning that stays with them long after they close a laptop.
