Schools Beyond Screens – Boston

Petition for Intentional Technology Use in Boston Public Schools

School districts across the country are reconsidering screen use in the classroom. Led by the recent resolution passed by LA Unified School District, reforms include setting hard grade-level limits, blocking YouTube and gaming platforms on school devices, eliminating devices for the youngest students, and requiring weekly screen reports to parents. This is happening because parents organized, showed up, and made it impossible to ignore their concerns. In Boston, it is time for us to do the same. The Boston School Committee has the authority to act immediately. They do not need to wait for state guidance or federal standards. They do not need the mayor’s approval. Dozens of districts across the country have already acted to protect their students from the damage rendered by screens and generative AI. The Boston School Committee needs to hear that their own community is paying attention and expects leadership to act on these issues, rather than remain silent. This petition is the first step. The letter is based on resolutions that have already passed in other districts -- the same structure, the same core asks. It takes a minute to sign and a few shares to gain momentum. Let’s get Boston Public Schools on board!
