Schools Beyond Screens–Austin
Petition for Intentional Technology Use in Austin ISD Schools
Evidence shows that screen-based education is not superior and, in fact, is detrimental. Some of the nation's largest school districts, led by the recent resolution passed by Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), have taken action to reduce classroom screen time by setting grade-level limits, blocking YouTube and gaming sites on school devices, and eliminating devices for the youngest students. This isn't happening because district administrators or school board trustees decided to act. It's happening because parents organized, showed up, and made their voices impossible to ignore. Austin ISD school board trustees need to listen to our voices now. They need to know that their communities are paying attention and expect them to take action on screen time policies. They do not need to wait for federal standards, state guidance, or TEA requirements; they have the power to act right now. Our letter is based on real resolutions that have already passed—the same structure and the same core requests, adapted for Austin ISD. This petition is the signal that it’s time for the school board to lead.
