We Demand an AI Moratorium in LAUSD Schools
There is a growing scientific consensus that AI use undermines the learning process, as well as the human relationship between teachers and students. It promotes cheating, and can diminish students' cognition, critical thinking, memory, motivation, persistence, and creativity—perhaps irreversibly. Its use can cause depression, psychosis, and even lead to suicide. This is a public health crisis. Nearly every day, a new study is published with dire warnings for the long-term effects of AI use on children's brains. And this is to say nothing of the long list of moral and ethical concerns inherent to commercial AI products. Until the LAUSD school board's Ad Hoc Committee on AI has had time to assess the existing research and weigh the risks against the potential benefits, there can be no justification for continuing to allow the district's students to be used as guinea pigs for this untested technology.
