Why This Matters

Students are growing up in a digital landscape that is rapidly changing, with increasing use of devices, educational apps, social media, artificial intelligence tools, and online communication systems. These shifts bring real opportunities, but they also raise concerns that impact our children in the classroom and beyond.

To: The {District} School Committee and Superintendent {name}
From:
Parents/guardians of {District} Public Schools students (and interested community members)
We, the undersigned parents and guardians of {district} Public Schools students, along with community members who care deeply about the well-being of {district}'s children, respectfully urge the district to create a Technology Advisory Committee - a standing group of administrators, educators, parents, students, and community representatives who can work collaboratively on the many fast-evolving issues related to technology use in our schools.
Why We Are Asking for This Committee
{District} students are growing up in a digital landscape that is rapidly changing, with increasing use of devices, educational apps, social media, artificial intelligence tools, and online communication systems. These shifts bring real opportunities, but they also raise concerns that impact our children in the classroom and beyond.
A recent New York Times opinion piece highlighted how schools across the country have adopted classroom technology faster than they have evaluated its purpose or impact, often to the detriment of learning. We want Lexington to be proactive, intentional, and research-aligned in its approach. Other nearby communities, including Malden Public Schools, have already formed tech-related working groups to bring educators, parents, and students together to shape thoughtful policy. Lexington should do the same.
What This Committee Would Do
A {District} Technology Advisory Committee could:
  • Review research and best practices around instructional technology, personal device policies, and AI
  • Recommend consistent, developmentally aligned expectations for screen use across grade levels
  • Strengthen communication and transparency with families
  • Support digital wellness, safety, citizenship, and equity
  • Ensure that technology enhances student learning and well-being
  • Present findings and recommendations to the School Committee on a periodic basis
Our Request

We ask the School Committee to form this Technology Advisory Committee during the {years} school year, with membership that includes educators, administrators, students, parents, and relevant community partners.
Our Commitment
We, the undersigned, believe this collaborative approach will strengthen teaching and learning, support student mental health, and ensure that Lexington remains a leader in education.
We respectfully request your support in establishing this committee.
