Finish Phone-free Schools NOW!
Massachusetts is closer than ever to phone-free schools, but the bill is stuck. The House and Senate agree on phone-free schools but disagree on how to regulate social media. The Legislature’s formal sessions ended July 31, and lawmakers are now meeting in informal sessions, where it’s harder to pass anything contested. The two-year session ends in early January 2027. Anything not finished by then has to start over. That’s why hearing from parents right now matters.

Call on Rep Lori Trahan to reject preemption
Massachusetts families: we urgently need your help. Reports indicate that Representative Lori Trahan may be negotiating federal AI legislation that could prevent states from creating and enforcing their own child safety protections online. This would make it harder for states like Massachusetts to respond to emerging harms involving AI, including addictive algorithms, deepfakes, exploitation, self-harm content, and manipulative chatbot interactions. Parents have seen what happens when technology moves faster than protections for children. States must retain the right to act. Please take 3 quick actions today: Call Rep. Trahan’s office and ask her to oppose federal preemption of state AI laws. Send a letter or email. Sign the petition. Children’s safety must come before tech industry pressure.

Petition for Intentional Technology Use In Massachusetts Schools
School districts across the country are reconsidering screen use in the classroom. Reforms include setting hard grade-level limits, blocking YouTube and gaming platforms on school devices, eliminating devices for the youngest students, and requiring weekly screen reports to parents. This is happening because parents organized, showed up, and made it impossible to ignore their concerns. In Massachusetts, it is time for us to do the same. Districts have the authority to act immediately. They do not need to wait for state guidance or federal standards. Dozens of districts across the country have already acted to protect their students from the damage rendered by screens and generative AI. However, we are not only advocating for change at the district level. Turning Life On and MA-Distraction Free Schools will continue to work with state leadership to get changes done at the state level, as well. District and state leaders across the commonwealth need to hear that their own communities are paying attention and expect leadership to act on these issues, rather than remain silent. It takes a minute to sign and a few shares to gain momentum. We need many signees across the commonwealth to impact change at all levels. Let’s get Massachusetts Schools on board! **Please only sign this petition if you live in Massachusetts. If you already signed the Boston version of this petition, PLEASE ALSO SIGN THIS ONE. This petition collects zip codes and we will share supporters with groups in their own communities based on your zip code. School committees want to hear from local parents only, so including the zip code guarantees that we are connecting supporters with the right decision makers. Thank you!***
