Why This Matters
Let's help our kids be kids a little longer by encouraging more in-person connection and delaying the use of addictive tech that can interfere with healthy childhood experiences.
Why This Pledge Matters
Research from The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt shows that childhood has fundamentally changed since 2010. We've moved from a play-based childhood to a phone-based childhood, leading to:
- Increased anxiety and depression in teens
- Reduced face-to-face social interaction
- Disrupted sleep patterns
- Fragmented attention spans
The Pledge
As a community, we commit to:
- Delaying smartphones until at least high school (age 14)
- Limiting social media until age 16
- Supporting phone-free schools during the school day
- Encouraging more independence and free play in the real world
How to Get Started
- Share this pledge with 5 families in your community
- Host a coffee chat to discuss concerns and solutions
- Connect with other parents who share these values
- Work together to create new community norms
Remember: You're not alone in this. Many parents share these concerns, and collective action makes individual choices easier for everyone.
