Our Mission.

Following the overwhelming interest and engagement in the Navigating Parenting in a "Digital World" workshops facilitated by Jill Anderson — a local teacher, mom and founder of Mindful Tech Lessons — our community took the next step: coming together to protect childhood and support one another in raising kids who thrive offline. We believe smartphones and social media are not healthy for kids. In order to roll back the phone-based childhood and restore the play-based childhood, we must act together. This is a voluntary sign-up for any members of the Croton community committed to our mission: * Keep smartphones & social media out of childhood * Foster a community culture that values play, independence, & real-world experiences for kids * Advocate for phone-free schools & intentional tech use in schools * All members of the CCC are invited to participate in local initiatives to share ideas & support one another. The phone-based childhood is a collective action problem that can only be solved collectively. As a strong community committed to shared values, we can give our kids a healthy childhood. Note: we believe it is never too late for a family to adjust its approach to smartphones & social media. We welcome & support any families committed to our mission, and are happy to provide guidance for families looking to reduce or eliminate smartphones and social media in their kids' lives. We also welcome Croton businesses and organizations to get involved! One of our initiatives is placing beautifully decorated book boxes, designed and painted by local children in waiting areas around town. These boxes give kids something to read while they wait, helping replace screen time with real-world imagination and learning. Our team handles all collecting and distributing of books. We also hope local businesses will help us build an exceptionally supportive and kid-friendly community, whether that means being understanding of kids walking independently around the village, or helping a child in need with a quick phone call if necessary. Together, we can make Croton a community that nurtures a healthy childhood filled with play, independence, and real-world experience— one small change at a time. 💜 Please Note: This collective isn't affiliated with any school district or PTA.
